Eyelid surgery is considered one of the least invasive and easiest to recover from facial plastic surgeries. This is largely due to its low risk profile and consistently good results. However, that does not mean it is necessarily pleasant. Patients do still experience some side effects, often bruising and swelling. Here are some tips for how to reduce bruising and swelling after eyelid surgery.
#1: Elevate Your Head
Like when recovering from any other surgery, your surgeon will recommend elevating the healing body part. This helps draw blood flow from the area to reduce bruising and swelling. This holds true with eyelid surgery. Elevating the head of your bed when sleeping and resting, often just at about forty-five degrees, can help reduce swelling and the amount of time you swell.
#2: Avoid NSAIDs
NSAIDs refer to a particular type of pain reliever that includes popular over-the-counter options like ibuprofen and aspirin. These options can have a slight blood thinning effect that can prolong and/or worsen bruising. While not necessarily dangerous for all people to take during surgical recovery, if you want to limit swelling and bruising, stick to Tylenol and any other options Dr. Santos prescribes.
#3: Cold Compresses
For the first two days or so, Dr. Santos may recommend applying cold or ice compresses to the eyes. This can help make you more comfortable and also reduce swelling. Only do this occasionally and under the instruction of Dr. Santos.
